Only 12 cards are used and any one is selected and noted.  

The cards are shuffled cut then the zig-zag shuffle separates half the cards into a pile.

The top card of the pile tells if it is a spot card or a court card.

The second Zig Zag shuffle cuts the remaining cards in half and the top card of the separated pile indicates a red or black card.

A third Zig Zag shuffle separates the remaining cards and the top card of the pile indicates the suit.

One card has been separated entirely from the cards through the Zig-Zag process and it is always the selected card.
